Why a competition

The long term future of British Ballet is with these young dancers and it is our privilege to ensure that their potential is realised

Dame Antoinette Sibley DBE, RAD President

...this is certainly an exciting new initiative filling a gap somewhere between the many ensemble performance opportunities offered to young dancers by companies…and the major individual competitions, which are contested at a later age…it is long overdue and very welcome.

Q. Why a Competition?

A. For the Future of British Ballet

Securing the future of British Ballet

The RAD teamed up with The Rudolph Nureyev Foundation and in 2005, launched the Fonteyn Nureyev Young Dancers Competition. The project, headed by RAD president Dame Antoinette Sibley, was designed to help secure the future of British Ballet by igniting passion and excitement for ballet in young dancers today, nurturing their talent and encouraging their development into disciplined, professional dancers. It also gives them the rare opportunity to experience the thrill of performing in front of a live audience on professional stages. Read accounts of past candidates here
